2 Piece African “Up and Down” Garment – Nigeria
Winning Bid: $55.00
Item condition: New
Categories: Africa, Embroidery, Garment, Nigeria, Wearables
Description
This handsome pair is made for a man so sized for a giant and contains a lot of fabric. The wonderful cotton warp ikat fabric is natural off white and brown. Yoruba women have traditionally produced these much wider cloths on their upright single-heddle looms. It has a bit of white machine embroidery at the neckline. The informal term for an outfit like this is an ‘up and down’. The top measures 22″ across the shoulders with a fluted bottom edge of 76″. It is 42″ long from the shoulder and the sleeves are 19″ long. The pants have a drawstring closure with a 50″ waist and the legs are 41″ long.
