Akrakh Block Print Scarf – India

Winning Bid: $85.00

Donated by E.Y.H.O. Tours

Item condition: New

This stunning Akrakh block print scarf was donated by E.Y.H.O. Tours. Ajrakh in Kutchi means “Keep today alive”. It refers to a 4000-year-old generational block print technique practiced in northwest India and Sindh, Pakistan. Ajrakh is built up layer by layer through 14 -16 separate processes, requiring exceptional mastery in natural dyes, mordants, and intricate block print. Often, the block print is repeated on the reverse side so technically there is no “wrong side” to the textile. Today, Ajrakh is still made in the traditional way with natural dyes (indigo is favored) and mordants, and an array of hand carved blocks.

This special piece was made by Sufiyan Khatri of the Kutchi Gujarat. She used natural indigo, madder red and iron ore dyes in the printing of this handwoven lightweight cotton muslin scarf that is traditionally used as a woman’s head scarf or man’s turban. It measures 22″ wide x 78″ long.
