“Guardians of the Arts” by Marilyn Anderson

Guardians of the Arts / Guardianes de Las Artes was donated by Marilyn Anderson, the artist of this book, scholar and WARP member. Marilyn Anderson shares her passion for the traditional arts and crafts of the Mayan people of Guatemala in this beautiful art book. Marilyn’s detailed woodcut and linoleum prints illustrate artists at work, including backstrap weavers, foot loom weavers, spinners, and jaspe knotters.

About Marilyn Anderson:

Marilyn Anderson is an artist, photographer and author. Originally from Portland Oregon, she studied at Marylhurst College, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Marilyn then spent time in Mexico and Guatemala, subsequently receiving her BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop/SUNY Buffalo. For 16 years she worked as a visual arts mentor at SUNY Empire State College, in Rochester, NY.

Since the 1970s, Marilyn has produced publications, including Backstrap Weaving (co-authored with Barbara Tabor), Guatemalan Textiles Today and Granddaughters of Corn (co-authored with Jonathan Garlock). Her most recent publication (2016) is Guardianes de las artes /Guardians of the Arts.

Over the years, Marilyn has received a number of grants and fellowships and has had exhibits of her photographs and relief prints. Marilyn continues her photography, produces block prints, paintings and publications to further her Pro Arte Maya Project. She also works to help produce and distribute a multilingual Maya languages/Spanish educational coloring book for children: Maya Arts and Crafts of Guatemala.
