Cochineal Dyed Oaxaca Runner – Mexico

Winning Bid: $85.00

Item condition: New

This gorgeous striped runner is definitely for purple lovers. Simplicity at its best. The donor purchased it in Oaxaca about 20 years ago and believes it was woven by a Mixtec weaver from Huazolotitla. The luscious purple cotton was dyed with dyes extracted from mollusk shells and combined with cotton dyed with indigo and cochinilla. It is half of a pozahuancos, a traditional wrap worn by Mixtec women along the coast. There are very few of the purple shell dyers remaining in the area so this is a very special piece for not only cohineal dye¬† lovers but indigo too! It measures 14″ wide X 72″ long.
