Description
This folksy backstrap woven poncho is the perfect spring fall pullover. A mix of homegrown handspun naturally dyed cotton and wool from their own sheep make this extra special. The dyes include moitle, lions beard, guava leaves, oak bark and bouganvillia flowers which make a subtle, but colorful central panel. This piece measures 22″ x 19″ and was beautifully woven and constructed by Antonai Santiz Guzman. Antonia is part of a group of textile artists called X-Chilul pak’ in San Juan Cancuc, a Mayan Tseltal community in the highlands of Chiapas. The 40 women themselves plant cotton, shear their own sheep, spin the wool and cotton, and dye with natural dyes.
