Embroidery Class & Kit – Guatemala

Winning Bid: $200.00

Donated by Kakaw Designs

Item condition: New

Kakaw Designs donated this amazing online embroidery class. Claribel, a Mayan Weaver from Guatemala,  goes over the basic stitches and figures used traditionally for decorating the neckline of huipiles in Sumpango, Guatemala. Included in this auction item is a canvas tote already hand-stenciled by the master embroideress, as well as a variety of naturally-dyed cotton threads from their partner weavers at Lake Atitlán. They also send out a PDF guide with pre-recorded close-up videos of each of the stitches before the 1.5-hour live Zoom session.

It’s great fun to learn about the meaning behind the patterns, with Claribel showing sample huipiles from before and now to compare and contrast. Sumpango has experienced a local movement to reclaim traditional textiles in daily use, and as such, is constantly evolving just like fashion in other places. Kakaw Designs considers this a healthy sign of a living tradition, and Claribel can certainly tell you more about it.

They generally like to hold their online sessions on Saturday mornings and can coordinate with the winner of this auction item to schedule their next session together. Note that they would invite others to join as it is a group class, maximum of 8 participants online.
