Handspun Organic Cotton Rebozo/Shawl – Guatemala

Winning Bid: $158.00

Valued at $220

Donated by Kakaw Designs

Item condition: New

Description

Kakaw Designs donated this rebozo, made with all local organic cotton fibers that have been hand-spun by Tzutujil spinners using a traditional drop spindle, or called “malacate” in Guatemala. The cotton is grown between Lake Atitlán and Nahualá, with the spinning and weaving done at San Juan la Laguna by Doña Marta and her family. The fibers soften with use, and the gorgeous hue of the natural brown heirloom “ixcaco” (ish-ka-ko) cotton is so gorgeous. Unfortunately, this past harvest season was not very productive, and Kakaw Designs have not been  able to order many rebozos. This is a very much grassroots and slow artform, with local families bringing back heirloom cotton growing. Kakaw Designs, Mari Gray, designed this rebozo and loves supporting this transition back to traditional slow textile production.

It not only makes a great shawl but could be used as a table runner or wall hanging as well. It measures 25″ wide x 76″ long plus fringes. It is done in plain weave and the colors consist of natural white cotton, natural brown heirloom cotton and natural white dyed with indigo.

**Please note that the warp has been starched for weaving, and it will get softer with use and wash. It needs to be hand-washed with a gentle detergent and line dry.
