Description

This beautiful wool tapestry is a delight to the eyes. Pure folk art from the simplistic animals to the handspun yarn. Woven into this are palm trees, plants, waterbirds and wildlife. the color is subtle from the natural dyes. It measures 31″ high x 56″ long plus the fringe and was handwoven in Egypt. In excellent condition.

This tapestry was woven in Harraniya at the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre. The centre has a fascinating history of introducing children to the weaving process. There is a big garden at the centre where the plants for dyes are grown. The young people are encouraged to weave what they see in the natural world around them and use their imaginations without restriction. As they grow into adulthood they become extremely fine weavers and often mentor the younger ones. Ramses Wissa Wassef was an architect, potter, weaver and designer who died in 1974. He delighted in bringing the art of weaving to the children of Harraniya. His wife and daughters continued the centre after his death.
