San Pedro Sacatepequez Colorful Huipil – Guatemala

NFS

Description

Identifying this very unique huipil required tapping into our Gutemalan WARP members. They even had to go to an expert, Violeta Gutierrez, a textile curator with the Ixchel museum. She believes it is from San Pedro Sacatepequez, Guatemala. It is not the usual design of San Pedro but it looks to be related to that area. Our Guatemalan backstrap loom weaving members believe it is made on a floor loom because the technique is so unusual. This is really a very special piece and truly a work of art with its vibrant colors and patterns. Although short, it is an adult huipil and measures 15″ high x 45″ wide. The head opening is quite small, 18″ in total circumference. One more interesting thing to note is that it was donated by a woman who was a former poet laureate in Colorado. Now 91, she was also a Fulbright Scholar in her youth in Guatemala which is when she picked up this great piece. It would be stunning hanging on a wall or a showstopper to wear.
