NFS

Donated by WARP grant recipients, the women of X-Chilul Pak

Description

A contemporary looking woven design made on ancient type equipment? What next? These gorgeous cotton cushion covers are made with a mix of commercial threads with some dyed in pomegranate peel and moitle to create a block pattern down the center of each cover. Subtle colors are beautifully set off with the black and white. These pieces measure 22″ x 19″ and were woven on a backstrap loom by Juana Gomez Torres. Juana is part of a group of textile artists called X-Chilul pak’ in San Juan Cancuc, a Mayan Tseltal community in the highlands of Chiapas. The 40 women themselves plant cotton, shear their own sheep, spin the cotton and wool, and dye with natural dyes.
