About Queen Amina:

Queen Amina Embroidery began in 1994 in Zaria City, the old walled part of the town of Zaria, Kaduna State, in northern Nigeria. Hassana Yusuf has managed the group since its inception as a cooperative organization named for the 16th century ruler of the Zazzau Emirate, Queen Amina. The organization represents a group of 25 women, along with seamstresses and designers, and provides an outlet for the excellent embroidery work of Zaria City women. Queen Amina Embroidery women use traditional Hausa patterns and embroidery stitches as well as couched stitching associated with passementerie embroidery brought to Zaria by men who returned from Mecca. Hassana Yusuf has attended the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market with the finest craft artists from around the world.
