Ukranian Rushnyk (Wedding Towel) – Ukraine

Winning Bid: $90.00

Item condition: New

This lovely piece was a bequest to WARP from the estate of the late Kathryn McKenney. It did not come with any information but through some asking around and research discovered it is a Ukranian Rushnyk or Wedding towel. It is Hutsu regional embroidery which is beautiful detailed cross stitching on a woven cotton base of white. The symbols have hidden meanings and in a sense are a novel. In addition to holding many meanings, it represents several blessing to the Ukranian family. The rushnyk plays an important role in wedding rituals. During a wedding ceremony, the couple will step on the cloth before they take their vows. The embroidered rushynk symbolizes purity as well as hope that the newlywed couple will never face poverty or hard times.  The saying goes “may the couple never stand on a bare dirt floor.” This meaningful piece is 13″ wide x 80″ long plus the elaborate fringe adds 7″ to each end making it a total of 94″ long.  It is a beautiful addition to the table or hung on the wall.
