This donated black huipil is embroidered on purchased cotton cloth with flowers with Zapatista women’s faces (see the eyes) is from Weaving for Justice. It proudly displays the words “Cuando una mujer advanza no hay un hombre que retroceda” (When a woman advances, no man goes back”). Later on the women changed the words to “When a woman rises, no man stays behind.” Both sayings represent the focus on women’s rights of the Zapatista movement in Chiapas. The blouse was made in 2020 by a member of Tsobol Antsetik (Women United) a weaving group from Chixiltón, Chenalhó, Chiapas, Mexico.  It measures 21.5 “ wide and 24” long.

Weaving for Justice is a volunteer, non-profit organization working in solidarity with Maya women’s weaving cooperatives in highland Chiapas, Mexico. Created to assist the members of the cooperatives to continue living on their ancestral lands in sustainable ways that respect their lands, language (Tsotsil), and traditions. Working with the weavers to EDUCATE the public about these Maya women’s lives, struggles, and contributions to a sustainable and just society.
