The Hausa people of northern Nigeria are renowned for embroidery of voluminous robes known as babban riga. In Zaria City, robe embroidery was primarily done by men until the 1970s, when women began to take up the hand-embroidery work. In 1994, several excellent women embroiderers, who were interested in embroidering garments and smaller pieces using robe designs, came together to form the group, Queen Amina Embroidery, managed by Hassana Yusuf.
