May 14-18, 2025
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Mark your calendars! We are excited to announce that we have dates set for WARP’s 2025 Annual Meeting. We will be meeting May 14-18, 2025 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The nearest airport is in Birmingham, and we will provide an airport shuttle bus on arrival & departure days.
Our planning committee is working on a great program, including speakers and field trips to local places of interest. We will open registration in November, with the full program available then. We hope you will join us!
Featured Speaker
Mary Madison is a weaver, teacher, and author of Plantation Slave Weavers Remember: An Oral History. Mary will join us in Tuscaloosa as a featured speaker, presenting: Joy comes in the morning: Testimonies of slave weavers. Mary teaches fiber art classes at the Manitou Art Center in Manitou Springs, Colorado. With any spare time, she uses quilting techniques to make contemporary quilted wall hangings.
Local Field Trips
We will have an optional field trip providing bus transportation to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and other points of interest in Birmingham.
The other field trip option is a visit to the quilting community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The residents of Gee’s Bend are direct descendants of enslaved cotton plantation workers, and their quilts are in the permanent collections of over 30 leading art museums.
