Networking Roundtable: Preserving Cultural Traditions

February 25, 2025

Join WARP for our new monthly members program! This year we began a series of Networking Roundtable online discussion groups for members on Zoom. The goal is to give members an opportunity to network and discuss topics of interest that advance WARP’s overall mission. Please note that if you would like to attend but are unavailable at the time listed, register anyway and you will receive a link to the recording as soon as it is available.

Retaining and Preserving Cultural Textile Traditions- Textiles often preserve and retain/reflect a culture’s beliefs, values, identities, history, future, and social structure, to name a few key concepts. Keeping traditional textile practices alive in a changing world can be an arduous process involving time, energy, persistence, and commitment. Recognizing the contributions and perspectives of past, current, and future artisans can bring many questions to the forefront. Some of these questions can include:

  • What is traditional?
  • For whom are cultural textile traditions preserved? For whose benefit?
  • What would it look like to be preserved?
  • Should or would the same techniques be applied?
  • Should or would it be critical to utilize the same materials and the same designs?
  • What about the evolution of new generations of artists?
  • What if they don’t want to reproduce traditional pieces for tourists, museums and their culture? Or can’t make a living doing it?
  • How do archeological artifacts impact what’s happening now?

Join us as we explore these questions and more in this month’s roundtable discussion!

Facilitator:

Deborah Chandler has been a member of WARP since Day 1, has worked in fair trade settings with Latin American artisans since 1990, and lived in Guatemala since 2000, where she has written three books about Mayan textile artisans. Supporting those who want to preserve their own cultures is, she believes, very important as well as hugely gratifying. She looks forward to a conversation with others about how to go about it.
