Coming to the WARP Meeting? Here are some fun things to do in Colorado

by Deborah Chandler

We are often told that the PLACE of the WARP meeting is an important factor in people’s decision to attend the meeting. Colorado is a GREAT place to live or visit, and we want to share a few of the many options available while you are there. Keep in mind that Colorado in May can be sunny and warm or deliver snow. We’ve had both at past Colorado WARP meetings. Thanks to Cathy Jacobus for making up most of this list, and we hope you will have time before or after the meeting to enjoy some of them. Browse through and check the links – surprises await. (And you’ll get a longer list in your registration packets.) In all cases, check before you go to be sure the information here is up-to-date.

Main Gallery Evolutions CFE (Call For Entry)
The Evolutions CFE show never disappoints with the variety of entries. The jurors have made their choices of the quilts that will be in the exhibit, and we think you will be surprised and delighted with the quilts. In the next weeks, we will be adding details and descriptions, so stay tuned. You’ll want to join us for this one!

Northeast GalleryThorns & Spikes | The 4 Common Corners Exhibit

It is amazing to see what comes from a creative group of people challenging each other to create original quilts for a theme. They take 4 months to develop and create their work for each theme. This exhibit is the result of the THEME challenge “Thorns and Spikes” for a group who all live in the Common 4 Corner states, and the only rule is that their work represents these states. This exhibit will challenge your ideas – but why not start sketching your solution to the challenge to compare to theirs.

Weaving a Foundation: Cornerstones of the Textile Arts Collection features 60 objects from the museum’s permanent collection, two-thirds of which have never been shown.

Throughout the Denver Art Museum’s history, textile arts have played a fundamental role in the development of its collecting philosophies and exhibition programs. The first textile entered the museum almost 100 years ago, and since that time, textile arts have been regular additions to the collection. Among the handful of early patrons, the Douglas Family of Evergreen, Colorado, emerged as the most steadfast donors of textiles. This exhibition highlights a selection of the family’s donations that demonstrates their celebration of traditional and living cultures and the value of exhibiting them together.

Though the Douglas family’s commitment to the Native Arts of North America is well documented, this exhibition reveals their interest in diverse world cultures and textile traditions. The eclectic presentation features textiles from Indigenous traditions across the world, including regions of the American Southwest and Mexico; India and Pakistan; and the Indonesian islands of Bali, Java, and Sumatra.
