How can a woven piece of cloth be a powerful catalyst for connection, compassion, and change? Let me introduce you to the Women’s Woven Voices project – an international, collaborative art project that supports women in claiming their personal power by inviting them to write, weave, and share their stories. Envisioning a tremendous tapestry as an art installation, I reached out until more than 1,000 women participated in the project from ten different countries. Individually woven “story cloths” are stitched together creating a new collective story that shows the beauty, creativity, diversity, compassion, and power of women in community. The tapestry raises awareness about solutions to challenges women experience globally including gender violence, abuse, and inequity.
The idea for the project was conceived when I was at a turning point in my artistic life and was feeling a deep inner urge to be making art that addressed the social issues meaningful to me. While I was at a women’s conference listening to inspirational women sharing their life stories, I was shaken as they shared the abusive experiences that they had overcome. Making the world a place where women and girls are safe to thrive has long been a passion of mine, so in 2018 I founded the Women’s Woven Voices project to promote creativity, community, and compassion while supporting women in being catalysts for change.
I believe that storytelling and art are powerful creative forces, so I included three elements into the project experience: writing, weaving, and sharing. First, people are invited to reflect on what made them the strong person that they are today. Then, they use writing and weaving as a way of accessing, processing, and translating their life experiences into story and art.
Weaving a piece of cloth connects our hands to our hearts and reminds us of our human resourcefulness, so I was especially excited to invite people to weave and experience the healing power of a repetitive, mindful activity. Their story cloth is an expression of their voice through art that connects them to a global vision.

It was healing to weave this strip in my own way but with the knowledge that it would join hundreds of others in celebration of women’s resilience and empowerment.
The third element of the project is sharing, so as soon as I began creating the tapestry it was exhibited at regional and international women’s conferences, art events, museums, universities, and community events in the USA. During the Pandemic, the tapestry was shared at the 65th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in the virtual NGO Exhibition Hall.
Recently, I installed the Women’s Woven Voices tapestry in the Women’s Village at the Parliament of the World’s Religions held in Chicago, Illinois. This international event gathered over 7,000 people from 95 countries and over 200 religious backgrounds to explore the theme
“A Call to Conscience: Defending Freedom & Human Rights”. Over the week of the conference, thousands of attendees viewed and interacted with the tapestry as they were invited to reflect on compassionate actions that they can take to create a more equitable and safe world for women and girls.
I am currently looking for new venues and events where the tapestry can be exhibited to amplify the messages of creativity, community, and compassion. I encourage groups to participate in the project and submit photos of their woven story cloths for the Global Tapestry Gallery on my website, www.womenswovenvoices.com. There are tutorial videos for setting up the loom, weaving and finishing the cloth, writing prompts, and links to organizations focused on the mission. Here’s an idea of the prompts: If you were to capture your life story in a piece of woven cloth, what would it include? What colors and textures would best portray your unique voice and experiences?

¿Cómo puede un pedazo de tela ser un poderoso catalizador para la conexión, la compasión y el cambio? Permítanme presentarles el proyecto “Women’s Woven Voices”, un proyecto de arte colaborativo e internacional que apoya a las mujeres a reclamar su poder personal invitándolas a escribir, tejer y compartir sus historias. Imaginé lograr un tapiz como una instalación de arte, y lo seguí intentando hasta que más de 1.000 mujeres de diez países diferentes participaron en el proyecto. Se cosen “telas de historias” que fueron tejidas individualmente para crear una nueva historia colectiva que muestra la belleza, la creatividad, la diversidad, la compasión y el poder de las mujeres en la comunidad. El tapiz crea conciencia sobre las soluciones a los desafíos que enfrentan las mujeres a nivel mundial, incluyendo la violencia de género, el abuso y la desigualdad.
La idea del proyecto fue concebida cuando me encontraba en un punto de inflexión en mi vida artística en donde sentía una profunda necesidad interior de hacer arte que abordara los problemas sociales significativos para mí. Mientras estaba en una conferencia de mujeres escuchando a mujeres inspiradoras compartiendo sus historias de vida, me estremecí cuando compartieron las experiencias abusivas que habían superado. Hacer del mundo un lugar donde las mujeres y las niñas puedan prosperar con seguridad ha sido durante mucho tiempo una de mis pasiones, por lo que en 2018 fundé el proyecto Women’s Woven Voices para promover la creatividad, la comunidad y la compasión y, al mismo tiempo, apoyar a las mujeres para que sean catalizadoras del cambio.
Creo que el arte y el contar historias son fuerzas creativas poderosas, por eso incluí tres elementos en la experiencia de este proyecto: escribir, tejer y compartir. Primero, se invita a las personas a reflexionar sobre lo que las convirtió en la personas fuertes que son ahora. Luego, utilizan la escritura y el tejido como una forma de acceder, procesar y traducir sus experiencias de vida en historias y arte.
Tejer un pedazo de tela conecta nuestras manos con nuestro corazón, y nos recuerda nuestro ingenio humano, por lo que me emocionó especialmente poder invitar a las personas a tejer y experimentar el poder curativo de una actividad repetitiva y consciente. Su “tela con historia” es una expresión de su voz a través del arte, que a su vez los conecta con una visión global.
Un participante compartió esto:
“Fue curativo tejer esta tira a mi manera, pero sabiendo que se uniría a cientos de otras para celebrar la resiliencia y el empoderamiento de las mujeres”
El tercer elemento del proyecto es compartir, por lo que tan pronto como comencé a crear el tapiz, se exhibió en conferencias de mujeres regionales e internacionales, eventos de arte, museos, universidades y eventos comunitarios en EUA. Durante la pandemia, el tapiz se compartió en la 65ª Comisión de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Condición Jurídica y Social de la Mujer en la Sala de Exposiciones virtual de ONG.
Recientemente, instalé el tapiz Women’s Woven Voices en la Aldea de las Mujeres del Parlamento de las Religiones del Mundo celebrado en Chicago, Illinois. Este evento internacional reunió a más de 7.000 personas de 95 países y más de 200 orígenes religiosos diferentes para explorar el tema.
“Un llamado a la conciencia: defendiendo la libertad y los derechos humanos”. Durante la semana de la conferencia, miles de asistentes vieron e interactuaron con el tapiz mientras fueron invitados a reflexionar sobre las acciones compasivas que pueden tomar para crear un mundo más equitativo y seguro para las mujeres y las niñas.
Actualmente estoy buscando nuevos lugares y eventos donde se pueda exhibir el tapiz para amplificar los mensajes de creatividad, comunidad y compasión.
