Katyi Ya’a is a young, multi-generational organization run collectively in the indigenous Mixteco village on the coast of Oaxaca. Our name means brown cotton, and we spin and weave native, locally grown, organic natural brown and white cotton. While cotton and textile production is centuries old, a democratic women’s textile collective is something new. Katyi Ya’a produces high- quality backstrap loom–woven textiles that include shawls, scarves, pillow covers, table runners, placemats, napkins, and shoulder bags. Besides taking custom orders, we sell drop-spindle and wheel-spun thread in three different weights.
