Description

These lovely little pouches were made and donated by Queen Amina Embroidery, located in Zaria City, in northern Nigeria. Tan threads were expertly embroidered in the chain stitch on damask fabric using the Northern Knot pattern.  The Queen Amina Embroidery women combine cotton threads with their exquisite traditional Hausa patterns and embroidery stitches. In addition they use couched stitching associated with passementerie embroidery brought to Zaria by men who returned from Mecca. Pouches are always great for odds and ends and come in handy for small gifts. Keep one and give away the others! They come in assorted colors:

1) light blue cloth with tan/dark grey embroidery

2) dark cream cloth with tan/dark grey embroidery and last

3) cream cloth with tan embroidery.

They measure 3″ wide x 5″ long and are new.

About Queen Amina Embroidery:

Queen Amina Embroidery began in 1994, located in Zaria City, the old walled part of the town of Zaria, Kaduna State, in northern Nigeria. Hassana Yusuf has managed the group since its inception as a cooperative organization named for the 16th century ruler of the Zazzau Emirate, Queen Amina. The organization represents a group of 20 women, along with seamstresses and designers, and provides an outlet for the excellent embroidery work of Zaria City women. Queen Amina Embroidery women use traditional Hausa patterns and embroidery stitches as well as couched stitching associated with passementerie embroidery brought to Zaria by men who returned from Mecca.
