Recently I read a poem written by a friend, Gayle Markow, about her Thanksgiving dinner and the eight-hour conversation that was such a luxury for the four women present. In one part of the poem she says:
Not to mention four chronologically-qualifying-old women
And for a short time an even older old man
Plus two young visitors who came and moved the molecules around the room
in an entirely different way and everyone got delighted
I mean everyone. I mean really delighted.
Not that we four didn’t get delighted on our own.
We did!
And it reminded me of WARP.
That so describes us right now. We are mostly “chronologically-qualifying-old women”, with a small percentage of men, and a rising tide of new younger members. I smile a little thinking that when WARP started 30 years ago, most of us who were at those first meetings WERE in our 30s and 40s. It was indeed a young idea, carried out by young people. BUT that was 30 years ago, and now we need to bring in new young members to “move the molecules around the room”.

I’ve been thinking about how to do that, and of course the first thing is that more people, young as well as not-so-young, have to know about us.
This morning I watched another of the games in the World Cup, a sports event probably even bigger on an international scale than the Olympics. (They say that 3.6 billion people watched the games!) I saw again one of their smart ways of bringing in young people. As the teams leave the locker rooms and walk onto the field, there is a child accompanying every football/soccer player. As I watched this morning I thought, “We should be doing that. But how?” And then it came to me.
“How about if members bring young people to the Annual Meeting in July?” It could be your grandchildren, neighbors, students, church members, guild members, anyone you know who might be inspired by meeting our international membership and seeing how we are working in the world. There are so many options that don’t show up on Top Ten Career lists. Imagine if you had known of something like WARP when you were young and deciding what to do with your life. What might that have meant?
Bringing someone to the meeting is exhilarating, but of course not easy. So for those who can’t manage that, here’s a lighter option. Find a young person who is interested in cross-cultural matters and give them a membership to WARP as a gift, so they can really see what we are about and decide if they want to get involved. WARP membership and contacts have given focus to many, and led to jobs and careers – not to mention volunteer opportunities – that were never imagined before. By the time you see this the main giving holidays will have passed, but there are still birthdays. As we enter a new year, with new dreams and goals, such a gift might open a new panorama for a young person, showing them options, and more importantly, that you believe in them. Actions like that have had huge impacts on people, and that kind of world-opening impact is just what WARP wants to be doing.
Alice Brown had the idea when she established the Scholarship Fund for young people to be able to come to the Annual Meetings. Those of us who have met WARP Scholarship students over the years know what a boon that has been, for them and for WARP. Let’s see how we can expand on that.
And of course, easiest of all, donations to the Scholarship Fund are always welcome. Alice got the fund going, but it is up to us to keep it going.
All of this – bringing someone to the meeting, giving a membership, donating to the Scholarship Fund – would also be a clear statement that you believe in young people working toward weaving a real peace, an idea as important now as it has ever been in the history of humankind. Please consider it. The 2023 Annual Meeting will be in Ohio, south of Cleveland, during summer vacation, and we welcome all comers.

Creciendo WARP: Nos volvemos más grandes, pero recibimos más jóvenes

Recientemente leí un poema escrito por mi amiga Gayle Markow, sobre su cena de Acción de Gracias y la conversación de ocho horas que fue un lujo para las cuatro mujeres presentes. En una parte del poema dice:
Sin mencionar cuatro ancianas cronológicamente calificadas.
Y por un corto tiempo un anciano aún mayor.
Dos jóvenes visitantes vinieron y movieron las moléculas por la habitación
de una manera completamente diferente y todos quedaron encantados.
Me refiero a todos. Quiero decir realmente encantados.
No es que nosotros cuatro no nos deleitáramos solos.
¡Lo hacíamos!
Y me recordó a WARP.
Esto nos describe muy bien actualmente. Somos en su mayoría “ancianas cronológicamente bien calificadas”, con un pequeño porcentaje de hombres y una marea creciente de nuevos miembros más jóvenes. Sonrío un poco al pensar que cuando WARP comenzó hace 30 años, la mayoría de los que estuvimos en esas primeras reuniones TENÍAMOS entre 30 y 40 años. De hecho, fue una idea joven, llevada a cabo por jóvenes. PERO eso fue hace 30 años, y ahora necesitamos traer nuevos miembros jóvenes para “mover las moléculas por la habitación”.
He estado pensando en cómo hacer eso y, por supuesto, lo primero es hacer que más personas, jóvenes y no tan jóvenes, sepan sobre nosotros.
Esta mañana vi otro partido del Mundial, un evento deportivo probablemente incluso más grande a escala internacional que los Juegos Olímpicos. (¡Dicen que 3.600 millones de personas vieron estos partidos!). Y vi una forma inteligente de atraer a los jóvenes. Cuando los equipos salen de los vestuarios y caminan hacia el campo, siempre hay un niño que acompaña a cada jugador de fútbol. Mientras miraba eso esta mañana, pensé: “Deberíamos estar haciendo eso. ¿Pero cómo?” Y luego vino a mí.
“¿Qué tal si los miembros traen jóvenes a la Reunión Anual en julio?” Podrían ser sus nietos, vecinos, estudiantes, miembros de la iglesia, miembros del gremio, cualquier persona que conozca que podría inspirarse al conocer nuestra membresía internacional y ver cómo estamos trabajando en el mundo. Hay tantas opciones que no aparecen en las listas de Top Ten Career. Imagínese si hubiera conocido algo como WARP cuando era joven y estaba decidiendo qué hacer con su vida. ¿Qué podría haber significado eso?

Llevar a alguien a la reunión es emocionante, pero por supuesto no es fácil. Entonces, para aquellos que no les es posible hacer eso, aquí hay una opción más fácil. Pueden encontrar a una persona joven que esté interesada en asuntos interculturales y le pueden dar una membresía de WARP como regalo, para que este joven realmente pueda ver de qué se trata y decidir si quiere involucrarse. Las membresías y los contactos de WARP han ayudado a muchos y los han llevado a encontrar trabajos y carreras, sin mencionar las oportunidades de voluntariado, que nunca antes se habían imaginado. Para cuando lean esto, los regalos navideños habrán pasado, pero todavía están los regalos de cumpleaños.
Al entrar en un nuevo año, con nuevos sueños y metas, tal regalo podría abrir un nuevo panorama para un joven, mostrándole opciones y diciéndole que crees en él. Acciones como esa han tenido un gran impacto en las personas, y ese tipo de impacto de apertura al mundo es justo lo que WARP quiere hacer.
Alice Brown tuvo la idea cuando estableció el Fondo de Becas para que los jóvenes pudieran asistir a las Reuniones Anuales. Aquellos de nosotros que hemos conocido a los estudiantes de la Beca WARP a lo largo de los años sabemos la bendición que ha sido para ellos y para WARP. Veamos cómo podemos ampliar eso.
Y, por supuesto, lo más fácil de todo, las donaciones al Fondo de Becas siempre son bienvenidas. Alice puso en marcha el fondo, pero depende de nosotros mantenerlo en marcha.
Todo esto (traer a alguien a la reunión, otorgar una membresía, donar al Fondo de Becas) también sería una declaración clara de que crees en los jóvenes que trabajan para tejer una paz real, una idea tan importante ahora como lo ha sido siempre en la historia de la humanidad. Por favor considéralo. La Reunión Anual de 2023 será en Ohio, al sur de Cleveland, durante las vacaciones de verano, y damos la bienvenida a todos los asistentes.
