Six women sat around the table looking at me. I had just announced the end of our embroidery session. No one moved. “We don’t want to leave,” Fadia said, smiling. Her eyes, like those of her five classmates, were red and tearful.
My students and I had just discussed final embroidery projects. It was a warm Friday morning in Beirut, Lebanon. The six women courageously chose personal, emotional topics to be splashed out on fabric. As they spoke about them, they fell into tears. It was one of the most cathartic moments I witnessed at Espace Fann.
I launched Espace Fann with Nour Tannir, an interior architect and stylist, in October 2018. Tucked in a small studio near the sea, Espace Fann is a creative school offering skill building and design thinking courses at university level. We are not accredited and do not provide degrees, but the instruction we offer is curriculum-based and our teachers are all university professors. This formula keeps our prices low, our classes accessible to all, and our material serious and empowering.
Espace Fann offers a variety of courses in:
- Fine arts: Drawing and sketching, oil painting, watercolor, vitrail, tempera painting, expressionism, impressionism, abstract art, collage..
- Fiber arts: Embroidery, weaving, sewing, crochet, macrame..
- Jewelry design: Jewelry design and fabrication (4 levels available), beading, enameling..
- Islamic art: Islamic geometry, calligraphy..
- Digital and audiovisual arts: Digital illustration, digital caricature, digital collage, logo design, packaging design, photography..
- Entrepreneurial skills: Branding and promotion, accounting made easy..
To date, Espace Fann has graduated 338 students, most of them women. Of the latter, 15.7 percent established a new business in the arts after taking one or more courses at the studio. We are very proud of this number, as we feel we are contributing to the wellbeing of our community during incredibly difficult times.
Since 2019, Lebanon has witnessed a series of unfortunate events: a botched revolution, the COVID pandemic and a serious economic meltdown (1 usd was = 1500 lpb. Just today it’s = 40,000 lpb) with everything it entails (poverty, inflation, no medications, no public services -including electricity). In 2020, we also witnessed the most violent non-atomic blast in history, the Beirut explosion, few streets away from our doorstep.
In these dire circumstances, Espace Fann became an oasis of color and tranquility in the middle of the chaos. We managed to keep our prices low by applying to various grants and, accordingly, we helped empower and heal women as they faced these multiple challenges.
Mona is one such student. She was fired from her high-paying job during the crisis and spent most of her time desperately hiding in her room for a year. When she registered in our weaving class, she confided to her instructor about the importance of these sessions for her. “This is my last chance,” she said. “I do not know anything about weaving and I do not know if I will like it, but if I don’t, I also do not know what I will do.”
Today, Mona has her own line of woven accessories and artifacts. She is selling her pieces through our boutique and at other exhibitions. Her days are spent behind the loom.
“This is what keeps me going,” Nour Tannir told me. “It is difficult, but Espace Fann helps us too. When we see the impact of what we do.. when we feel the joy and the change in our students. It makes it all worth it.”
Check the crowdfunding campaign that we have recently launched to pay for rent and utilities. Any extra funding will be used to purchase supplies and fix elements in the studio that were destroyed during the Beirut Explosion and that remain unaddressed.

Yasmine Dabbous, PhD, is the founder of Espace Fann and Kinship Stories, a line of tribal adornments. A longtime journalist and journalism lecturer, Dabbous migrated to the arts as she saw in the latter a better way to tell stories. She has several exhibitions to her account in New York, DC, London and Beirut.
Ayudando a mujeres Libanesas a través del Arte y la artesanía

Seis mujeres sentadas alrededor de la mesa me miraban. Acababa de anunciar el final de nuestra sesión de bordado. Nadie se movió. “No queremos irnos”, dijo Fadia, sonriendo. Sus ojos, como los de sus cinco compañeros de clase, estaban rojos y llorosos.
Mis alumnos y yo acabábamos de discutir los proyectos finales de bordado. Era una cálida mañana de viernes en Beirut, Líbano. Las seis mujeres eligieron valientemente temas personales y emotivos para plasmarlos en la tela. Mientras hablaban sobre estos temas, se pusieron a llorar. Fue uno de los momentos más catárticos que presencié en Espace Fann.
Cree Espace Fann con Nour Tannir, arquitecta de interiores y estilista, en octubre de 2018. Escondido en un pequeño estudio cerca del mar, Espace Fann es una escuela creativa que ofrece cursos de desarrollo de habilidades y pensamiento de diseño a nivel universitario. No estamos acreditados y no brindamos títulos, pero la instrucción que ofrecemos se basa en un plan de estudios y nuestros maestros son todos profesores universitarios. Espace Fann ofrece una variedad de cursos en:

- Diseño de joyeria: Diseño y fabricación de joyas (4 niveles disponibles), abalorios, esmaltado.
- Arte islámico: Geometría islámica, caligrafía.
- Artes digitales y audiovisuales: Ilustración digital, caricatura digital, collage digital, diseño de logotipos, diseño de empaque, fotografía.
- Habilidades empresariales: Branding y promoción, contabilidad simplificada.
Hasta la fecha, Espace Fann ha graduado a 338 estudiantes, la mayoría mujeres. De estos últimos, el 15,7 % establecieron un nuevo negocio en las artes después de tomar uno o más cursos en el estudio. Estamos muy orgullosas de este número, ya que sentimos que estamos contribuyendo al bienestar de nuestra comunidad durante tiempos increíblemente difíciles.
Desde 2019, Líbano ha sido testigo de una serie de eventos desafortunados: una revolución fallida, la pandemia de COVID y una crisis económica grave (1 USD era = 1500 lpb. / hoy mismo es = 40 000 lpb) con todo lo que eso conlleva: pobreza, inflación, no hay medicamentos , no hay servicios públicos (incluida la electricidad). En 2020, también fuimos testigos de la explosión no atómica más violenta de la historia, la explosión de Beirut, a pocas calles de nuestra puerta.
En estas terribles circunstancias, Espace Fann se convirtió en un oasis de color y tranquilidad en medio del caos. Logramos mantener nuestros precios bajos al solicitar varias subvenciones y, en consecuencia, ayudamos a empoderar y sanar a las mujeres que enfrentaban estos múltiples desafíos.
Mona es una de esas estudiantes. Fue despedida de su trabajo bien remunerado durante la crisis y pasó la mayor parte del tiempo escondida desesperadamente en su habitación durante un año. Cuando se registró en nuestra clase de tejido, le confió a su instructora la importancia de estas sesiones para ella. “Esta es mi última oportunidad”, dijo. “Yo no sé nada de tejer y no sé si me gustará, pero si no, tampoco sé lo que haré”.
Hoy, Mona tiene su propia línea de accesorios y artefactos tejidos. Ella está vendiendo sus piezas a través de nuestra boutique y en otras exhibiciones. Sus días los pasa detrás del telar.
“Esto es lo que me mantiene en marcha”, me dijo Nour Tannir. Es difícil, pero Espace Fann también nos ayuda. Cuando vemos el impacto de lo que hacemos, cuando sentimos la alegría y el cambio en nuestros alumnos. Hace que todo valga la pena.
Consulta la campaña de crowdfunding que hemos lanzado recientemente para pagar el alquiler y los servicios públicos. Cualquier financiamiento adicional se utilizará para comprar suministros y reparar elementos en el estudio que fueron destruidos durante la Explosión de Beirut y que siguen sin resolverse.
