Description

An elaborate ceremonial huipil from San Juan Cotzal, Guatemala, woven by artisans of the Ixil Maya ethnic group during the 1970s–1980s. The garment features a striking red central panel richly decorated with geometric and zoomorphic motifs in vibrant blues, greens, purples, and yellows, framed by ivory side panels with intricate horizontal bands. Handwoven on a backstrap loom, this textile showcases the ceremonial artistry and cultural symbolism characteristic of Cotzal weavers. Some light staining present, consistent with age and use.
