Barkcloth is peeled from the mutuba tree, pounded into supple cloth, cut into strips, then woven on floor looms with locally grown raffia into a cotton warp. The barkcloth makers are tenth generation artisans who work with Mekeka Designs, as do the weavers from Grace Cottage Weavers, whose specialty is weaving with indigenous fibers.
