Description

This very traditional white on white pikbil huipil is woven in three panels, each with four selvedges, gauze background, and inlaid designs. Lightweight cotton, it is worn in the cloud forests of Alta Verapaz, where the humidity can be overwhelming. All stitching of seams and neckline is done by hand, and for this huipil the symbol used is a star, which is said to guide us through life. Pikbil huipils are increasingly rare, as only a handful of weavers continue to take the time to weave them.
