Every year one of the important tasks at the Business Meeting, held during the Annual Gathering, is the election of new board members. Currently the Board of WARP has nine members, each with a three-year term. Members may serve two consecutive terms if they wish, then they must step down for some time before being on the board again. Terms are staggered, so that usually there are two or three members being elected, but it may be more or fewer. This year two members complete their terms. Maren Beck is completing her second term, so she must step down, and Diane Manning is completing her first term and has chosen to stay on for another. That means that we have only one board position to fill, and thanks to our Nominating Committee, made up of a mix of board and non-board members, our candidate is Susan Albert of San Antonio, Texas.
Susan was born in New York City and grew up in the suburbs, giving her frequent opportunities to visit art museums with her mother, one of their favorite outings. Her love (and awe) of textiles began at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when the Unicorn Tapestries were on exhibition there. She was eight years old, and says her response was BOOM! Later she attended the Rhode Island School of Design where she studied Textile Design, which led to work back in NYC with Karl Mann and Associates as well as independent design work. At 31 she moved to New Orleans, where she worked for a textile manufacturer and exhibited her own work.
A move to Dallas and later San Antonio, Texas led to a significant career shift, and Susan discovered the worlds of marketing, fundraising, and non-profits, which actually go well together. “Becoming involved with Friendship Bridge in 2007* was a match made in heaven – meeting people who promoted opportunities to underserved, indigenous women to create better futures is a way to profoundly change the world. Women DO hold up half the sky!” she says. (*Friendship Bridge is a micro-credit organization that has been an active WARP member for years.)
While still working for one non-profit, Susan is also volunteering for others. Of WARP she says, “Last year was my first annual meeting and an introduction to the depth and breadth of WARP and its members. I feel that WARP’s work is meaningful in a world that is quickly losing cultural traditions and modes of expression that are vital to global communities as they seek to find economic and social opportunities. …I am honored to be asked to join the Board and look forward to working with committed people to help WARP continue its work.”
Susan is the only candidate on the ballot, but nominations may be made from the floor during the meeting. The election will take place during the meeting, and the new term will begin immediately as Maren moves out and the new board member moves in.
This year’s Nominating Committee is made up of Chad Troyer, Emily Huber, Mary Joan Ferrara-Marsland, and Judi Jetson. Next year four board members will have terms ending, two first termers and two second termers. Being on the board is one of the best jobs in WARP, so think about whether or not you would like to be that involved. It’s a lot of work, and also a lot of fun.

Cada año, una de las tareas importantes en la Reunión de Negocio de WARP, que se lleva a cabo durante el Encuentro Anual, es la elección de nuevos miembros de la junta. Actualmente, la Junta de WARP cuenta con nueve miembros, cada uno con un periodo de tres años. Los periodos están escalonados, de modo que generalmente se eligen dos o tres miembros, aunque pueden ser más o menos.
Este año, dos miembros concluyen sus periodos. Maren Beck está terminando su segundo periodo, por lo que debe retirarse, y Diane Manning está terminando su primer periodo y ha decidido continuar por otro más. Mientras continúa trabajando para una organización sin fines de lucro, Susan también colabora como voluntaria en otras. Sobre WARP, comenta: “El año pasado fue mi primera reunión anual y una introducción a la profundidad y amplitud de WARP y sus miembros. Siento que el trabajo de WARP es significativo en un mundo que está perdiendo rápidamente tradiciones culturales y formas de expresión que son vitales para las comunidades globales mientras buscan oportunidades económicas y sociales. …Me siento honrada de haber sido invitada a formar parte de la Junta directiva y espero trabajar con personas comprometidas para ayudar a WARP a continuar su labor.”
Susan es la única candidata en la boleta, pero se pueden hacer nominaciones desde el público durante la reunión. La elección se llevará a cabo durante la reunión, y el nuevo periodo comenzará de inmediato, cuando Maren deje su puesto y el nuevo miembro de la junta lo ocupe.
