This Magenta Celebration Table Linen Set has been handwoven on a backstrap loom by a women’s weaving cooperative in Guatemala using 100% cotton yarn. The embroidery is woven into the piece during the weaving. Unique treasures, the center embroidery motifs express the Maya view of the world that everything is interconnected, different threads of the same fabric, and that nature and cosmic unity exists through diversity. Geometric motifs represent the relation among the universe, the earth, and humanity. Motifs depicting plants and flowers reflect their relationship with nature. Keeping these motifs alive in our products is important to the preservation of Mam culture and allows our customers to enjoy the beautiful work of our cooperative.
Mayamam Weavers is a collective of talented female artists, makers and businesswomen based in Cajolá, Guatemala. They care about weaving high quality textiles born out of tradition while enriching and serving the community where they live and work. Even though Guatemalan backstrap weaving is known for its intricate brocading, the community of Cajolá has historically kept their weaving more simple. However, the backstrap weavers of Mayamam Weavers have incorporated brocading into their weaving on a small scale, to evoke the heritage and still have an affordable product for the North American market. The brocading uses motifs drawn from their collective memory and their love of the natural world that surrounds them. The weavers are not always aware of the meanings of their motifs, but conversations with a spiritual guide have helped them to understand the meanings behind some of them. In general, the meanings behind the motifs can be unique to a specific community.
