Pillow with Fes Embroidery
SOLD
Artist: Fatima Benayad
Sidi Kacem Zawiya, Morocco
Presented by Cooperative Zawiya Embroidery Group
Description
Fes embroidery resembles counted cross stitch, but is unique in that it is fully reversible, exactly the same on both sides. Traditionally brides used it to decorate linen pillows, sheets, and table linens for their trousseaus on a much finer fabric than used here. However, this synthetic fabric and DMC embroidery thread show the stitches and design much more clearly – and is much faster to do. Fatima uses her embroidery income to buy school materials and clothing for her daughters.
Dimensions: 16” X 17”
Borrowed from a private collection, this piece is not for sale, but Fatima and her fellow-embroiderers do custom work. For inquiries, contact Susan Schaefer Davis at sdavis@uslink.net.
