Description
A $5.00 ticket gives you a chance at winning this striking carpet with a cotton warp and undyed natural colored wool weft. This 3’ x 5’ carpet was designed and hand woven by Prakash Siju in Bhujodi village, Kutch, India, using a weft faced weave with hand inserted extra weft patterns and motifs. Prakash’s ancestors wove woolen ludi veils for Rabari camel herder women. Innovating on the ludi design, he enlarged the panchko (5 paise coin) diamond motif, and created a border with a scaled-up traditional pattern dungalo (crenalated hills) and scaled down 5 paise coins. Completing this package is Judy Frater’s book Artisans by Design which features Prakash. He will speak with Frater in a virtual WARP panel discussion on September 18. The carpet was juried into the 2023 International Folk Art Market. Prakash and his family work small scale. “Carpet weaving is a family craft,” he says. “We keep work in the community and scale within our capacity.”
Donated by Judy Frater, WARP Member and owner of Textiles Live, who leads small groups of textile lovers to learn hands-on from artisan graduates of the design school she founded in Kutch. Next tour 27 December-10 January! Learn more at www.textileslive.com
