Continuing Textile Traditions: Intercambios

Join WARP for our April Continuing Textile Traditions panel discussion with Intercambio. Intercambio are a group of artists living in Oaxaca, Mexico, whose lives have been profoundly Influenced by the culture and in particular the concept of the Guelaguetza in which giving and receiving play a critical role of creating and maintaining community.

Panelists:

Carolyn Smythe Kallenborn, Professor Emerita from the University of Wisconsin, is an internationally acclaimed artist working with textiles, film, and community projects. Since 2004, she has collaborated with artisans in Oaxaca, guiding students, artists, and academics. Through her exhibitions and documentary films Woven Lives and La Vida y Los Muertos, she advocates for Oaxacan culture. 

Miriam Campos is a third-generation embroidery artist from San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca, known for her family’s signature floral designs on traditional clothing. Her mother, Reyna Cornelio, grandmother Virginia Sanchez, and aunts are also renowned embroiderers. Miriam has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Ana Paula Fuentes is a photographer and social designer focused on Mexican culture. Originally from Mexico City, she has lived in Oaxaca since 2005 and was the founding director of the Textile Museum of Oaxaca. She has worked with non-profits, artisans, and cooperatives across Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chiapas, and was the director of the CADA Foundation, supporting cultural heritage. Since 2013, Ana has also led cultural tours, fostering connections between locals and visitors with a focus on respect and cultural sensitivity.
