Meet a Member: Fireside Chat with Susan Weltman
April 8, 2026 at 3:00 PM US Eastern Time
Join WARP for our April Fireside Chat with Susan Weltman! During our monthly Meet a Member program, we get to know a different WARP member each month.
Susan Weltman was fortunate to have parents who believed in the power and importance of community. Seeking advice and learning from others was always extremely important to them.
In high school her first picket line was at Woolworth’s in the early ’60’s, followed of course, by opposition to nuclear testing and the Vietnam War. She refused to “duck and cover,” knowing that no one would survive a nuclear attack. And yes, she was at the first Earth Day in Washington Square Park. Of great importance was her luck at finding the Ethical Culture Society youth group that met every Friday evening. The friends she met there are still among her closest friends; the discussions at their evening groups led greatly to her intellectual & political development – plus they just had a lot of fun!
Her professional life was as a family therapist at an adolescent psychiatric unit at a community mental health center. This was a job but also a formative experience, working with staff and kids from all over New Jersey. She also had the opportunity to speak publicly about her work with teens and to write a chapter about Jewish families in therapy (she is still getting royalties from the book.).
During that time Susan began weaving and joined the community of weavers. She was fortunate to take classes at the Newark Museum with beginning and advanced weavers from all over the State. This was the beginning of her identity as a weaver and an artist. She followed her love of textiles and color to create beautiful objects that could be held and worn. Susan’s extensive travels have been an inspiration to her artistic endeavors, either visiting fiber artists or being influenced by the sights she has seen. Susan has been a WARP member since 2005.
