Meet a Member: Fireside Chat with Teyana Neufeld

October 8, 2025

Join WARP for our October Fireside Chat with Teyana Neufeld! During our monthly Meet a Member program, we get to know a different WARP member each month.

Teyana Neufeld is a Canadian weaver and textile artist. After studying textiles (with a specific interest in weaving and garment construction) in Canada, she found it essential to explore her passion in a global context. From 2018 to 2022, she was Coordinator of Morija Arts Centre in Morija, Lesotho (southern Africa). While there she hand-built a weaving studio and trained groups of young people in the art and craft of weaving.

In July 2023, Neufeld moved to Zambia to work as Creative Designer and weaving instructor at Nayamba Trade Centre. The trade centre was established in 2020 as a not-for-profit social enterprise, and is dedicated to women’s empowerment through the production of quality handwoven items.  Through their annual training initiative, Nayamba Trade Centre provides rural Zambian women with hands-on skills such as weaving, spinning, natural dyeing, and tailoring.

In her own work, Neufeld has two obsessions: one is using coding techniques (such as Morse Code) to embed secret messages in her cloth. The other is using untraditional materials such as re-purposed plastic bags. For Neufeld, weaving is more than a craft—it’s a form of cultural dialogue and collective expression. She thrives in group settings where collaboration, learning, and the exchange of traditions enrich the creative process.
