Networking Roundtable: Cultural Awareness and Being a Culturally Sensitive Shopper When Traveling

October 28, 2025

Join WARP for our new monthly members program! In January, we began a series of Networking Roundtable online discussion groups for members on Zoom. The goal is to give members an opportunity to network and discuss topics of interest that advance WARP’s overall mission.

Cultural awareness is so important when traveling to other countries. It helps one to develop cultural sensitivity as a traveler. We all know that shopping in a marketplace or a shop can add to the travel experience. The question that often comes up is whether or not to bargain with artists and artisans. Our Roundtable discussion this month will explore experiences and ways we can be culturally aware and sensitive as buyers of local merchandise.

Cultural sensitivity begins with an understanding of differences between oneself and people from other countries in terms of backgrounds, attitudes, values, practices and traditions.  It is also about recognizing and valuing differences without imposing one’s own norms or judgment. Cultural awareness breaks down cultural barriers and helps people value and enjoy each others’ cultural diversity in a variety of experiences including shopping in a market place or a shop.

Please note that if you would like to attend but are unavailable at the time listed, register anyway and you will receive a link to the recording as soon as it is available.
